The Finnish Doctoral Education Network in Stochastics and Statistics (FDNSS) was established on 1 Jan 2016 as a continuation of the Finnish Doctoral Programme in Stochastics and Statistics (FDPSS). The objective of the network is to foster national cooperation in doctoral education and research in the fields of probability and statistics. The need for cooperation is growing on par with the demand for statistics in our society, as more and more data gets collected and stored by new technological devices and services. To keep Finland in the forefront of development and innovations, our country needs strong statistics, and to have strong statistics we need strong stochastics. Novel mathematical ideas of probability theory and stochastic analysis do not turn into tools of statistical computation by itself. To achieve this, mathematics and statistics need to communicate. This is the main purpose of the FDNSS.
The network offers Finnish universities and research institutes a framework of national collaboration by organizing joint seminars, courses, summer schools, and events intended to bringing together researchers and students in probability and statistics, and by promoting networking and peer support among students across organizational boundaries.
